The Pharmacists Society of the State of New York and the Pharmacists' Association of Western New York strongly support legislation that would authorize pharmacists, pursuant to a written collaborative agreement with a physician, to review, evaluate, modify and implement drug therapy.
Adverse drug interactions account for over 100,000 deaths each year and are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Medications errors exceed 2.7 million annually at a cost to our health system of over $177 billion. Studies indicate that fully 28% of these errors are preventable with nearly half of these errors occurring during the prescribing process.
When pharmacists are involved with providing drug information services, adverse drug reaction monitoring, drug protocol management and medical rounds in institutions, all studies demonstrate a statistically significant contribution in reducing such errors.
This legislation limits CDTM collaborative agreements to certain institutions such as hospitals, clinics and nursing homes.
Thirty-eight states currently authorize pharmacists to participate in collaborative drug therapy agreements with physicians in partnership on behalf of their patients.
This legislation limits collaborative drug therapy agreements in regulated institutions between licensed professions and we urge the Legislature to pass it.
